Inspired by print & pattern – geometrics

Have you heard the latest, greatest news?

Marie Perkins of the infamous Print & Pattern blog is publishing yet another book to add to her ever-growing, wonderful ,collection of print & pattern books!

This one is all about geometrics!

Time to get out your pens and paint! Lots of time left to get working and submit. Due date is September 7th, 2013.

“We will be using the term ‘geometrics’ loosely with all kinds of abstract shapes, motifs and patterns (and not just those using exact mathematical style geometry) being included. “

I am not sure if these are considered geometrics, but once I started it was hard to stop! I like to think of it as the zen of doodling.

I have started a few patterns because that’s how I like to work, but thinking I may submit some collage art as well.

“We are looking for patterns, illustrations and prints that use circles, squares, triangles, chevrons, stripes, dots and dashes, polygons, facets, and all other kinds of imaginative shapes”

I am liking “imaginative shapes”..snowflakes?

Not really sure if these are considered “geometrics”. I may have to get a second and third opinion before I submit.What do you think?

I did enjoy the process and I can see adapting these towards Christmas. No work is ever wasted!

A little more on the geometric side of things…

How about some paper collage turned pattern? Lots of opportunity to play around with ideas for this one!

I really like the idea of pulling these out again and re-working them. They have always been one of my favorites because they remind me so much of the paper collage work I love to do. I think these have some directional issues, but once worked out would fit quite nicely into the category.

I am sure you also have some old geometric prints or pattern that could be renewed!

Well, the summer is quickly coming to a close here in Whistler. The days are definitely getting shorter and the blankets and fireplace have come out for patio entertaining. I am a bit sad, but also a little excited. I like to treat Sept 1st as my second chance. A chance to re-assess my direction for 2013. A chance to accomplish all the goals I set out to achieve at the beginning of the year.

I am happy to say that I think things are running along tikkity-boo!

What does your creative process look like?

Do you ever wonder how other artists and designers come up with their creative ideas? I do!

I am creatively curious! I love to see the process of how one’s mind works from start to finish.

Rosie Martinez-Dekker is a Mexican designer based in The Netherlands.Rosie graduated in graphic and textile design in the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City .After working several years as textile designer, art director and in the business side of textiles and apparel she decided, with her husband, to form Believe Creative studio in 2011. Believe Creative Studio creates prints & patterns focused on design for baby, children and teens products.

Rosie style is whimsical, colorful, playful and fun.She creates both digitally and hand painted.

Today, Rosie will be sharing with us the creative process behind the development of her logo and website.

What inspires you to create? 

My inspiration comes from my everyday life, what I am feeling what I am doing, what is happening around me. For instance the illustration of the cats below was created a night that my cat, named Prunilla, was meowing in the studio,she wanted to go out for a night walk.So I added a little bit of my own imagination  and a new design was born.

I also like to find inspiration in pinterest, magazines and design blogs in general.

What medium do you like to create in?

I love to create in watercolor and gouache, I love to design directly in paper and play with water and colors.

Just a year ago I started also designing in Illustrator, and use the drawing tablet (Wacom) for the free sketchy style that I love so much.

Do you keep an art journal? How do you keep track of all of your ideas and inspiration?

I have a sketchbook but I have to confess that I am not very disciplined in sketching every time I create a pattern. I am a right in the moment kind of girl, so if I need inspiration I look for it in the moment and if necessary I sketch something right before starting creating.

Do you work on just one design from start to finish or do you have a number of different designs on the go?

I  only go for one design, I do not do trials and colors ways, sometimes I just play with the background color, and that makes my design process easy and fast.

Do you prefer to design for a brief/competition or your own personal inspiration?

I prefer my personal inspiration and my own briefs and mood boards.

What time of the day are you most creative?

After 2pm. Is weird, but I do not manage starting early, I normally start my day sporting, walking my dogs, doing stuff, then after I had a nice lunch is when I feel more inspired and ready to create!

Inspired by…pattern making tutorials

My paper, paint, pen and pattern addiction continues.I am feeling very satisfied with my progress of combining all medium into the world of pattern. As I like to say~ pattern making is a bit like putting together all the pieces of a puzzle. Slightly addictive and very satisfying.

I am already looking forward to spring and its just barely winter.

I made the above piece into a brick repeat pattern, but I am thinking it may be better as a simple placement print. I think I will make a collection of patterns around it using the motifs involved in it.

I am slowly trying to build up a portfolio of work and this piece will be for children.

Did anyone else out there get a little carried away with Cyber Monday shopping? I didn’t know online shopping could be so stressful.There were so many fantastic discounts.

I felt very lucky to get a sweet deal on a series of Laura Coyles Illustrator and pattern making classes. If you are interested in online, digital classes, you must have a look at reneepearson.com ~ digital training for artists. They have a large selection of self- paced and instructor led online classes.

Jessica Sprague is another online digital training site dedicated to artists, photographers and scrapbookers. I have taken a number of her Photoshop and tablet and have always been very happy. The beauty of these online courses is that you have access forever. Anytime you get a little stuck, all the info you need is right at your fingertips, saved in your classroom.

Kind of where I am at right now….

Patiently waiting for April to roll around, bringing with it the  start of my new online class

The Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design.

Wallpaper, clothing, home accessories, my favorite coffee cup from Anthropologie….if you look around you will start to notice print and pattern everywhere!

Someone has to design it…. I am ready to learn.

Truth be told I am a perpetual student, happiest when learning.  I love the daily inspiration it provides. The challenge it presents. The barrage of new ideas and dreams it creates.

Ahh more sleepless nights to come~ too much excitement  ….It is very hard being me.

So until my time arrives, I have started sketching in my journal, collecting inspirational color combinations and playing with design on my computer. My inspiration board is filling up!

For now that is all I have…
