A big shout out and thank you to Erin and LiveBig who gently guided me through the growing pains and helped point me in the right direction. My portfolio runneth over…

I like to do it all! I have decided That is who I am. There is  just no going back.

#Inktober Showcase

Inktober was started in 2009 and is still going strong today.  Mr Jake Parker, the creator of the project, has assigned very few rules

Pick up a pen, draw, hashtag it #inktober, repeat.

Anyone can take part and it seems like artists from all over the world do. I posted a picture and within 2 min 100 more pictures had been posted!

The goal is to practice your drawing skills and develop the positive habit of doing it daily.

Below are a few examples of my own work and a few from others within my surface pattern design community. Click on the pictures below for direct links to their Instagram accounts.

A Little Art a.k.a #alittleart

A little art – Big enough to make your mark, small enough  so that you can finish in one sitting.

I am loving Victoria Johnsons #alittleart project. Victoria started this personal project one month ago and invited others to play along. Like all good ideas, this one took off!

The place to play along – Instagram. It even has its own Instagram site to showcase the work of a global bunch of designers.

I  admire Victoria’s work – there is a certain free spirit about it that I  just love. Her colour combinations are unique. Her style fun and playful.

Below is a little grouping of a few of the experimental pieces she started out with. Visit her Instagram site for more insight on her project and a viewing of her current pieces.

I asked others to share their work to give you a sense of the variety of options there are to play with. The only restriction here is size, 2.5″ wide, other than that it is free game.

There are so many reasons to participate. Here are my top five.

3. Experimental – small art is a perfect place to try new things! Maybe there is a new technique or a different way of expressing yourself that you are interested in experimenting with. Maybe some new colours,composition or textures. Small art is perfect to play with.

4.Little art goes Big – I have been using my little art to explore composition and themes for Big art. Think of your little art as a thumbnail sketch for bigger things to come.

Claire Wilson for #alittleart {artistically afflicted blog}

5. Community – A place to ask opinions, get inspired and meet other like-minded creatives. I love seeing what others are posting and what they are using their little art for.
A little Art - Julie Hamilton {artistically afflicted blog} #alittleart

My little art all lined up. I have been playing around with painted and collaged papers in a grid like form. I have been working intuitively just to see how things go together. From there I have started working on a larger scale with concentration on my composition.
A little Art - Julie Hamilton {artistically afflicted blog} #alittleart

I have to admit I am loving these and excited about the possibility of re-working them into the world of art licensing. I can envision these as greeting cards, art prints, fabric panels, oh the list in endless (I hope!)

More info on that creative process at a later date.

Drop by and give #alittleart a try. If you have any revelations or insight to share about your process, I would love to hear them!

Blog break up letter {artistically afflicted blog}

I think I may be breaking up with my blog. I am having mixed feelings about it right now.I feel horrible.

It has served me so well and has always been here for me – I talk, it listens. A perfect place to show and tell.

I cannot lie though. I have discovered another.

If you are interested in showing your creative process, please feel free to use the hashtag #shareyoursketch. I started it many months ago and it has gained quite a bit of momentum with people sharing daily. I will be (re)starting a weekly #shareyoursketch column here featuring work from it.

While I am not saying goodbye  quite yet, I believe in fair chances for all, I think I am going to try things a bit differently around here. More frequent posts ~ Less words, more pictures. More about what really inspires me!

Come and meet some inspiring creatives ~ a blog hop

I have been asked to join in on a blog hop by my good friend Deborah Velasquez. I have just spent the past hour drifting backwards through the hop and I still can’t find its origin, but it has been well worth my time as I have stumbled upon some beautiful artists , writers and like minded souls from all over the world. One of which lives just down the mountain from me!

Today I will answer a few questions about my work and then point you in the direction of a few other creative souls who inspire me – Deborah Velasquez, Margot Miller and Laura Wooten

What are you working/writing on?

In typical  fashion, I have many projects on the go right now. I hop about daily from one project to the next, working on what inspires me at the moment.

My main focus this summer  is centered on an illustration project I have for The Whistler Survival Guide, a  directory for newcomers moving to the area. It is my first illustrating gig and while I am finding it challenging, I am in awe of how much I am learning. There will be more here on the blog in the fall when it is released.

Whistler summer - Julie Hamilton designs {artistically afflicted blog}

My summer fun project  involves creating a collection of 8 by 8″ mixed media pieces.  These mini works have become a a part of my daily creative practice.They are my go-to when I feel the need for a little painting, spraying and stamping in my life.

They make me happy.

I have recently written a post about the process here.

julie hamilton designs {artistically afflicted blog}

Mixed in with all of this is my art licensing work , monthly submissions for A Fresh Bunch and a new collection coming soon to Modern Yardage.

Life is busy, but very enjoyable!

Why do you create?

One of my favourite sayings and one that provides me with daily inspiration and the desire to create.

Never lose your sense of wonder

Six words that allow me to travel through life with eyes wide open

 Floral -  Julie Hamilton designs {artistically afflicted blog}

I am visually inspired by colour, texture and shape. My heart starts racing, I feel a little tingly all over and I can’t wait to dive into my art journal  when inspiration strikes. I love all the endless possibility that creating art provides. I love immersing myself in a theme and exploring different ways of representation. Simply put ~ I love the way art makes me feel.

When I am not creating I am in search of what to create next. It has become what makes me whole.

 Floral -  Julie Hamilton designs {artistically afflicted blog}

How does your creative process work?

I work best in short bursts of creative chaos. My paintings and mix media work are all intuitive. I start with marks and gradually move into texture and colour. I observe my mood and what is happening before me on the paper to dictate the direction the piece will take.

I can often be found lying on the couch, my artwork propped up before me, with eyes squinted as I turn my piece this way and that, hoping that something…anything.. will materialize before me.

Julie Hamilton Designs {artistically afflicted blog)

My surface pattern work is a little more structured and usually focused around a collection of motifs.I love to doodle and my sketchbook and pen are never far from my side. Life here becomes a little more computer oriented as I have to scan my work in and pattern in Illustrator.

julie hamilton designs {artistically afflicted blog}

I love the combination of both the structured and unstructured. It allows me to play and experiment with new techniques.

Oh how  I look forward to the day when I have mastered all of the Adobe programs so I can express myself in all mediums..

Ahhh… big sigh..that was a lot of writing in one sitting.

Now, onto the women in my life that inspire and motivate me. Some I know well and others I am in the process of getting to know.I chose to reach out to them in hopes that they would share and  learn a little bit more about what makes them tick.

Deborah Velasquez

I first met Deborah through Kelly Rae Roberts Flying Lessons. I believe we  originally connected based on a similar love for seeds and pods . Our friendship grew as we continued on a similar  journey with The Art & Business of Surface Pattern Design and then onto Make Art That Sells. She is my go-to girl in times of  creative need, both good and bad. She brings a smile to my face.

Please pop back to her blogpost here to learn all about her work and creative process.

Laura Wooten

Next up is Laura Wooten. Laura has been on a similar path with continued studies in both the Art & Business of Surface Pattern Design and Make Art that Sells. I was thrilled when I reached out to her to be a part of the bloghop and she said Yes! I love her  52 collage project – creating a collage each week.This has inspired me to no end and makes me want to try.

I admire her beautiful hand drawn sketches and prints. The colours are just beautiful –  I love the vintage feel.

These women will be blogging about their creative lives next Saturday and introducing you to other creatives that inspire them. You just never know who you may meet so be sure to drop by!

Thank you Artful Blogging!

I have some exciting news that I have been looking forward to sharing with you! I was a little hesitant to share it with anyone at first, I didn’t want to jinx it, but here it is in all of its glory. Ta da!

Artful Blogging ~ {artistically afflicted blog}

Thats right! I have been featured in the summer issue of  Stampingtons Artful Blogging magazine. It is a publication I have been admiring for some time now and am thrilled to be a part of it!

It is a little hard to come by in my neck of the woods, which makes it very special when I do get my hands on a copy. I have many a Stampington publication all lined up nicely under my coffee table. Their magazines cover many topics – art jornaling, photography, jewellery and lots of other topics all to do with handcrafted goodness. They do a wonderful job offering inspiration to artists everywhere.

Artful Blogging ~ {artistically afflicted blog}

I  would love to share the entire issue with you! This is just a  little sneak peek.

It is a beautiful, visually inspiring, look into the creative life of a global bunch of bloggers.It is filled with beautiful art, photography and written words all about their journey.
Artful Blogging ~ {artistically afflicted blog}

There is something quite wonderful about seeing your creative journey in print. I have been blogging now for almost 3 years and they did a wonderful job of pulling together pictures that capture the essence of what my blog is all about ~ the creative process, all the different medium used to tell your story , and the never ending  work in progress.

Artful Blogging ~ {artistically afflicted blog}

Along with my excitement and happiness, I have to admit to a feeling of nostalgia . I couldn’t help but  spent some time going back and re-discovering old  blog posts, laughing at my first attempts at art and remembering the butterflies the very first time I posted pictures of my art.Oh, the many paths I have followed to where I am now! It covers all the courses I have taken and most important the community I have surrounded myself with.

Way back in July of 2011, I remember thinking to myself  “what are you up to?” I really didn’t know at that time, but I had a faint idea of where all of this was supposed to lead.

I wanted to meet a group of like-minded creative souls (check). I wanted to become an artist (check).  I wanted to document my journey to gauge my accomplishments…and failures (check). I wanted to make a living as an artist (half-check) There is still lots to be accomplished!
Artful Blogging ~ {artistically afflicted blog}

Thank you very much Stampington & Company! I am honoured. Thank you for my moment!

To everyone here ~ Thanks for being part of the journey!

Top tips from Surface Pattern Designers!

A little shout out goes to Ali Benyon of Ali Benyon Designs for her Top tips and tricks for Surface Pattern Designers!

Recently Ali has created  2 blogposts with tips and tricks from a global bunch of surface pattern designers from all stages of their careers. I was fortunate to be included and shared a few of my own pearls of wisdom.

I found that all of the tips and tricks were applicable to anyone in the creative field from artists to start up entrepeneurs.

Inspirational quote {artistically afflicted blog}

There was lots of good advice. I walked away with a sense of comfort knowing that it’s not just me ~ this creative business is hard work! It demands that you show up everyday, you practice, and you believe. March forward, head up!

It…is….a….long…..process… (I am always in need of a reminder about this)

Deborah Velasquez, quote, authenticity

Art by Deborah Velasquez

It was interesting to read everyone’s take on being unique and staying true to yourself and your style. It seems that this is a little something that all of us struggle with. It doesn’t surprise me ~ we are visual artists, we love to look at art and more often than not we are inspired by it. I think it’s normal to want to try different tricks and techniques in a style not your own. It’s a great way to learn BUT realize that you have to make it your own. You have to add your very own signature style to it before you call it your own.
artistically afflicted blog

There was lots of advice about practice, patience and perseverance, a  few tips about color AND a great reminder of all the routes you can take in this profession. I often forget all of the endless avenues for your art so thank you for that!

I won’t give anymore away. I could spend hours discussing the ins and outs and how and whys of the creative process, but then that would take away from hours that could be spent just… Making Art!

Make Art – Make more Art – Enjoy the process = your time will come!

Part one is here

Part two is here

A big Thanks to Ali for bringing us all together!

Enjoy!

An actual photo of me doing what I love best – doodling. I think I was the only one with a smile on my face after 4 hours being stuck on the Sea to Sky highway. I have to admit it’s been about the only time I have had a bit of peace and quiet to actually sit down and just draw with no distractions.

Creative Process with Lindsay Buck

Today we have Lindsay Buck of Slumbermonkey Designs telling us a bit about her creative process. Lindsay blew me away with her attention to detail and process here.I admire her sketchy quality and love all the texture and layering.The colors are perfect for this season and her woodland theme is right on trend too!
Lindsay Buck on the {artistically afflicted} blog

Welcome Lindsay!

“Prickles and Pinecones”

The photos and process that I am going to talk about relate to an ongoing collection that I am developing based around Autumn, animals and natural forms.

Lindsay Buck on {artistically afflicted} blog

I get inspired to create by all the things that are around me. For this particular work I began gathering conkers (from the horse chestnut tree) and pinecones when I was out walking my dog. I love their protective, spiky surrounds and their colours. I gathered quite a collection and then I began to draw.

Lindsay Buck on {artistically afflicted} blog

I love working with fine liners and pens and all of my sketches are created in a little sketchbook that I use. I also began to think of hibernation and creatures that like to sleep a lot. I was drawn to hedgehogs and began to amass quite a few ideas and drawings.
Lindsay Buck on {artistically afflicted} blog

I had lots of material to work with and, after scanning my drawings into Photoshop, I began to develop individual motifs and design elements. I love playing around at this stage. Trying out colours, layering, and placing and different filters. I seem to have loads of ideas whizzing about in my head so I work on lots at once. I keep an eye on colour trends (Pinterest) and am often inspired from what I pin.
Lindsay Buck on {artistically afflicted} blog

This collection was something I was developing myself and I try and juggle this with chasing up briefs for competitions and submissions. At the moment I am really trying to build up my portfolio of work as I have only recently returned to Surface Design.
AABlog4

I decided to call the collection “Prickles and Pinecones” to draw together all the different elements that I was inspired by. I am still adding to it and keep returning to my theme, creating more drawings and patterns to put into various collections.

A Big thank you to Lindsay! I know these blogposts take alot of time and consideration to prepare and she did a great job recounting her creative process. All your hard work is appreciated! Thanks Lindsay.

Lindsay is a hardworker-look at all of her links! I have included them for you to drop by and say hello.She has just recently jumped in full force to the world of surface pattern design and would be a great person to connect to.I always love and appreciate meeting fellow creatives here on my blog or at many of the other social hotspots I frequent so please stop by and have a visit!
